Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Named the best building of the second half of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has completely transformed the city, placing it on the world stage and radically altering its image.
It was opened in 1997 based on a design by American architect Frank Gehry, who, after visiting the city, had no doubts about its location. “This is the place”, he said, after taking in a panoramic view of Bilbao from Artxanda Mountain. That place was the grounds of the old Compañía de Maderas, on the left bank of the estuary. As the architect himself explained, the design is based “on the port that was and the city that is”, and symbolises a ship anchored on the shores of the Nervión River. The titanium showcases the tones that the light casts on it at all hours of the day. Source: http://www.bilbaoturismo.net
