Bilbao awaits the Olentzero
Bilbao receives the Olentzero every December 23rd. Do you know who this character is?
The Olentzero is a charcoal-burner very loved by children. Every year comes down from the mountains loaded with gifts. But he never comes alone but accompanied by someone very special, his beloved Mari Domingi and other characters of the forest where he lives, such as Basajaun, a sort of Yeti.
Bilbao will receive them as they deserve, with a parade that will start at 5:30 p.m. in Plaza Moyua. This lovely team will tour the streets of the city and giving some nicegifts.
In this parade there will be music and traditional dantzaris, especially at the end of the festival held in the Plaza de Arriaga. Finaly, the Olentzero and Mari Domingi will give a speech from the balcony of the theater to thank all the attending people.
On the morning of the 24th the Olentzero is always present at the Arriaga Theater for that all those who want to give him their letters full of wishes. Then, the same night, when everyone is asleep, will pass through each house so they can open and enjoy their gifts on the 25th.
